Lincoln's Big Boy Room- Before and Mood Board

Updated: Apr 26, 2021

I am really excited to share this mood board with you today! I have a really embarrassing confession... my three year old Lincoln has never had his own bedroom *hangs head in shame*. He was born three months early (our little NICU fighter baby!!) and the room at our old house that was supposed to be his room was never even started! Then we moved here and the room that we have planned for him has taken the shape of guest room...my mom had her old bedroom furniture that she didn't want to get rid of and I had so many other spaces to focus on at the time I thought- well, let's just throw that furniture in Lincoln's room for now and I'll get to it soon. In the meantime, I started working on my eight year old Phoenix's room (which is actually almost finished and I'll plan to share that soon), my room, the front room, the living room, and somehow the room that I thought I would get to in a few months...sat looking like this for over a year!

The shame!! We did put a bunk bed in Phoenix's room with the thoughts that they could at least both sleep in there...which has worked out well, but it's definitely been Phoenix's room and he has no problem reminding Lincoln of that all. the. time. So at this point Lincoln's room feels urgent. I really want to create a super special space that is ALL HIS! He's the sweetest boy and I can't wait to finally do this for him. I'm also planning to do the entire makeover secretly and surprise him! I'm planning to put a childproof lock on the door handle for a few weeks as Kris and I start working on it. So fingers crossed I can keep this all under wraps for the next few months!

Let's get into what I'm thinking for the design! The first thing I knew I wanted to include in his room was some special wallpaper. I did a bit of wallpaper in Phoenix's closet (I will show you soon I promise!) and I loved it so much my only regret was that it was only in his closet and not more of a focal point in his room. Which led me to wanting to do a major focal wallpaper in Lincoln's room. Last week, I asked you to vote for your favorite wallpaper on facebook and instagram stories, so if you voted- THANK YOU!! These were the choices I had narrowed it down to.

Sources: A | B | C | D

I knew I was leaning towards A, but also loved the more modern vibe of B. I was so surprised that option D was the favorite in the votes (I combined both the facebook and instagram results)! Option A did come in a close second which was exciting. A few of the comments were that D would age better with him...and I do agree it looks more grown up. Option A could very easily go nursery... maybe I like it so much because he never had a nursery. I don't know, but I decided to go with option A! I ordered it last week and it's on its way here! I really hope that it all gets here ok and in the right size- it was ordered from a store in the the Netherlands, I used google translate to translate the website from Dutch to English and of course the measurements were all metric so I had to convert all of my measurements too. I'm crossing all of my fingers I got it right. Here's the overall plan.

Once I had the wallpaper picked out everything else seemed to fall into place. The teepee felt like such a sweet touch, I'm planning to fill it with books and pillows for a little reading nook. I'm praying the rug is as close of a color match to the wallpaper as it looks online- that's always a bit nerve-wracking. I like that this rug is simple yet the perfect colors. Doing something visually busy on the floor is not an option since I want the wallpaper to be the star here. The bear hamper is so charming. The "love you more" art is adorable and I think may be a great inspiration for some DIY art. I haven't chosen bedding yet- I'll probably go with the same philosophy as the rug though- something very subtle...and then add in some cute animal pillows. Here's the floor plan.

My plan is to wallpaper the wall with the window on it, right behind the bed. That's the wall you see when you first walk in, the entrance door is the one on the bottom (the door on the left is to the closet and the door to the right goes into the attic). And then I want to put the bed up against the window. I'm thinking a cute house frame bed- maybe like this? Then the play teepee next to that, with the rug underneath it all. I'm obviously going to swap out that crystal chandelier-esque light fixture to something more manly. I fell in love with the whimsical cloud light fixture I put in the mood board, but I do worry that goes a bit baby...so I may be on the hunt for something different. What do you think? Do you think Lincoln will like it? Will I be able to keep my mouth shut and not tell him?! I'm really excited- I'll keep you posted here and on social media of everything as it progresses!
